LGBTQI+ Act: Withdraw letter to parliament and apologise to the House- Yaw Serbeh to Presidency
Governance Analyst, Nana Yaw Serbeh has asked President Akufo-Addo as a matter of urgency apologize to Parliament for demanding of the House not to transmit the ‘Anti-Gay’ ACT to the Presidency for the President’s assent.
Nana Yaw Serbeh made these remarks in an interview with Kwame Adinkrah on Kumasi-based ‘Pure FM’, Thursday, March 21. He uttered that the President’s letter to Parliament is in bad faith, undermining the Parliamentary sovereignty enjoyed by the August house.
“Kwame, the President should withdraw the letter to parliament and apologise. Things would not have been this complicated if the president had made a phone call concerning his office receiving the bill.”
“Sending a letter to parliament on this particular issue is not about the show of power, rather a misconduct. The benefits of not accepting the anti- LGBTQ + bill which might probably come with help from external factors should not lead us to exchange our pride and culture which is important to us.
We might even find ourselves in a better position where we would not need help from others. The President should communicate and let us know the consequences that comes after accepting the bill and assure us that we can come back stronger rather than writing letters.” He remarked.
In a letter to Parliament on Monday March 18th, Presidential Secretary, Nana Asante Bediatuo said that it was “improper” for the Office of the President to receive and make any decision concerning the anti- LGBTQ + bill until the Supreme Court makes decisions on two pending applications for an order of interlocutory injunctions. This has brought up different opinions and criticisms from individuals and the Parliament, generating national controversies and discourse.
