Galamsey Controversy: MP Alleges Rival Party Sabotage
Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore Constituency and Middle Belt Campaign Coordinator for Vice President Dr. Bawumia, has sparked controversy with his recent statements on galamsey (illegal mining).
During a campaign event in his constituency, Dr. Afriyie declared that his party will not halt galamsey operations ‘today or tomorrow.’ He alleged that a rival party had intentionally imported foreigners to engage in illegal mining, with the ultimate goal of sabotaging his party’s electoral chances in constituencies heavily affected by galamsey.
Dr. Afriyie’s remarks have raised concerns about the prioritization of political interests over environmental and social concerns. Galamsey has severe consequences, including water pollution, deforestation, and community displacement.
The MP’s stance has also fueled debate about the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining. Critics argue that Dr. Afriyie’s comments undermine efforts to address the issue.
The ruling party has faced criticism for its handling of galamsey, with many calling for more decisive action.
