Galmasey can be won if it is not politicised – Dr. Aboagye Dacosta

Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), believes the fight against galamsey (illegal mining) can be won if it’s not politicized.

In an interview with Accra-based Original TV, Dr. Aboagye emphasized that a nationalistic approach is crucial. He stated, “Until the menace is treated with a nationalistic approach, the fight against it cannot be won.”

Dr. Aboagye called on chiefs to support the government’s efforts, noting that no individual or administration can combat galamsey alone.

Looking ahead to the 2024 elections, Dr. Aboagye suggested that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Mahama should sign a pact to combat galamsey.

“His [Dr. Bawumia’s] views on illegal mining are crystal clear. He’s described certain strategies several times. He is prepared to sign all necessary agreements,” Dr. Aboagye said.

He added, “Our solemn pledge as a government is to ensure we stay consistent with this pledge and harness existing potentials to reap the full benefits of building a very resolute small-scale mining sector that will be admired not only in the sub-region but globally.”

Dr. Aboagye stressed, “It can only succeed if it is a truly national battle, which no one seeks to exploit for political gain, as we saw in the last election.”
