Fuel Tanker-VIP Bus Collision Claims 7 Lives on Accra-Kumasi Highway

Tragedy struck on the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Sunday, September 22, 2024, when a devastating accident claimed the lives of seven people.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., a VIP bus with registration number GR 7632-24, traveling from Tamale to Accra, collided head-on with a fuel tanker registered GE-9644-21. The fuel tanker experienced a tire burst, causing it to swerve into the opposite lane and crash into the oncoming VIP bus at Obretema, a suburb in the Suhum Municipality.

The Ghana National Fire Service responded promptly to the emergency. Upon arrival, personnel found bystanders attempting to extract fuel from the overturned tanker. Firefighters intervened, warning of the dangers and risks associated with fuel tanker accidents.

Unfortunately, seven passengers on the VIP bus lost their lives in the collision. The surviving passengers were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital for medical treatment.

The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the need for vigilant maintenance of vehicles, particularly those carrying hazardous materials.
