Baba Yara Stadium Loses International Approval

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has withdrawn its approval for the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana, citing significant technical infractions, including a substandard playing field. This decision follows a recent inspection after the AFCON Qualifying match between Ghana and Angola on September 5, 2024.

CAF identified critical issues with the stadium, including:

– Poor playing surface condition

– Uneven surfaces

– Inadequate drainage

– Insufficient grass cover

These deficiencies led to the revocation of the stadium’s Category 3 status, rendering it unsuitable for competitive international matches.

CAF expressed disappointment and urged Ghanaian authorities to invest in upgrades. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) must now select alternative venues for upcoming AFCON qualifiers from CAF-approved locations outside Ghana.

CAF recommended a comprehensive assessment of all major international stadiums in Ghana to ensure compliance with technical standards and offered assistance, including an international pitch consultant, to guide necessary improvements.

The GFA pledged to collaborate with the government to address the issues and restore the Baba Yara Stadium to its former standing. This development adds pressure on Ghanaian authorities to improve sports infrastructure ahead of key international competitions.
