Winneba Fishmongers urge Conversion of Abandoned Processing Center into Cold Storage Facility

In the coastal town of Winneba, where fishing is the main way people make money, many men work as fishermen, catching different kinds of fish from the sea. The women in Winneba work as fishmongers, selling the fresh fish to locals and traders. Osakam, a part of Winneba, used to have a fish processing center meant to help prepare and store fish. But this center has been abandoned for some time because of several big problems.

The head of the Fishmongers Association said that the processing center is too small for all the fishmongers who need to use it. The building was made without asking the fishmongers what they needed, so it doesn’t suit their real needs. The site has major cleanliness issues, like open defecation and smoking around the building, which makes it very dirty for processing fish. Also, the electrical system in the center is broken, so fishmongers can’t use important equipment to dry their fish, which is necessary for keeping it fresh.

The Assemblyman for Osakam pointed out that the community had originally asked for a cold storage facility instead. A cold storage facility would let fishmongers keep their fish at low temperatures, helping the fish stay fresh for a longer time. This is especially important in Winneba, where many fishmongers don’t have refrigerators and depend on the processing center to keep their fish from spoiling. The problems with the current center have badly affected their earnings, making it hard for them to sell their fish for a good price and causing financial problems.

The Assemblyman is now asking the government, local leaders, chiefs, and the assembly to help solve these issues. The fishmongers are suggesting that the old fish processing center should be turned into a cold storage facility. They believe this change could make their work easier and provide a reliable way to earn money. They propose that charging a small fee of GHC 10 from each fishmonger could cover the costs of running the facility. The center could stay open and help the local fishmongers by giving them a better way to handle their fish.
