Bawumia Challenges Mahama to Economic Debate: Will He Accept?
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has thrown down the gauntlet, challenging former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to a debate on the economy and initiatives implemented by both political parties. Ghana has a rich history of hosting presidential debates, with four successful debates held back-to-back, showcasing the country’s democratic maturity. The first presidential debate was organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in 2000, with all aspirants in attendance except the then-ruling NDC.
In recent times, both Bawumia and Mahama have been engaging in a war of words, exchanging blows on various platforms, campaigns, and summits, focusing on their policies, economic performance, and governance. Mahama recently criticized the Akuffo-Addo-led NPP government, stating that Ghana had become a bankrupt and collapsed country due to poor leadership over the past eight years.
In response, Dr. Bawumia, addressing the CEO Summit via Zoom, challenged Mahama to a debate on the economy and performance of both governments. Bawumia highlighted the incumbent government’s achievements under President Nana Akuffo Addo, citing verifiable developmental projects such as the “Guinea Fowl” project, a reference to Mahama’s infamous guinea fowl saga during his administration.
