Angel FM News Editor narrowly escapes death as Gunmen storm his residence at night

The home of Edward Amagyei Naaso, the deputy news-editor of Kumasi-based Angel FM and Ashanti regional correspondent of the news portal, mynewsgh.com was ransacked on Sunday night by unknown gunmen.

The journalist was not present at the time of the incident, his sister who spoke in an interview with Nana Kwame Adjei Bohyen on Pure Morning Drive on Monday said, the men announced their presence on the compound with three warning shots before breaking into his living room.

“I was in the house with his daughter when I heard a terrifying murmuring on the compound around 11 pm; the noise was suddenly accompanied by 3 gunshots and within a few moments, I heard the front door being broken”, she said.

According to her, “they first ransacked the living room and took a laptop computer, two external hard disks, a pen drive and some books which were on his desk; they then entered his bedroom and then to mine, four of them and demanded that I showed them where Eddie was. I told them he had traveled out of the country on assignment but they would not have any of that and threatened to shoot and kill me and my niece if I failed to give him up”.

“The truth is that, Eddie is not in Ghana at the moment; surprisingly, the incident happened only 2 nights after he had left. They eventually left but warned that they will track him down by any means possible, until he learns how to mind his own business”. I really fear for the life of my brother now”, she lamented.

When the journalist was reached via phone on the same programme, he said he had been receiving threatening messages on his phone in the past few months but refused to pay any mind to them, because he thought “they were some of the usual nuances of the job”.

“I have been threatened, beaten and even arrested on several occasions in the line of this work, but I never imagined that somebody would really want to take my life; honestly I am terrified and do not know what to do”, he said.

The journalist is a seasoned advocate against illegal mining in Ghana and has claimed to possess several damning evidences of the involvement of several top people in government in the illicit gold mining business.

He is also a known advocate for LGBTQ rights and has written extensively on private blogs like Opera News and Mynewsgh.com against the Anti-LGBTQ bill currently before Ghana’s parliament.

Edward Amagyei Naaso who has been in the news several times for daring to publish certain stories, has had his equipment seized by law enforcement officers, arrested, beaten and ridiculed.

He has been a front line gatekeeper in the media space for close to seven years, having risen through the ranks as a news reporter, producer and now as deputy news editor at Angel FM Kumasi, a subsidiary station under the Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN) Ghana.
