We have approved over 1,200 textbooks- NaCCA to Teachers

The Director General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, (NaCCA), Dr. Edward Appiah has stated that over 1,200 text books have been approved by their body awaiting publication by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Purefmonline.com reports.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on ‘Pure Morning Drive’ with Kwame Adinkrah on Tuesday, Dr. Appiah remarked that questions on release dates of these textbooks should be directed to the MoE as they are in the best position to make that known.

He however noted that, being privy to specific meetings between the Ministry of Education (MoE) and some publishing agencies, he can disclose that procurement processes to find a publishing house have commenced.

”I’m here for NaCCA. Our mandate is to develop textbooks and curricula. We have approved over 1,200 text books.

Having been privy to some meetings at the Ministry of Education, I can tell you that the Ministry has taken up procurement processes negotiating with publishers.

I am confident that text books will be released to the various schools immediately procurement processes are completed.”

When asked by the host Kwame Adinkrah, on what has become of the March deadline given by GES for the release of the various textbooks to the schools, Dr. Appiah insisted that he is of the view the Service is endowed with the capacity to meet the deadline now that the MoE is almost done with the procurement process.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have recently called on government to as a matter of necessity release books based on the new curriculum for teachers to use to teach school pupils.

According to the Association, the delays in releasing the books have been affecting academic activities on the various schools campuses as teachers have to fall on materials that are not prescribed by NaCCA and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

However, the Director-General of GES, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa in a media interview on Accra-based Peace FM in August last year advised that teachers in the country could use the old text books in addition to finding other means as they wait for the new NaCCA textbooks to teach.

“So maybe you have a topic that interests you in the old textbooks, you can use that to teach using the skills of the standard-based. The topics have not changed but how you teach has only changed.”
