Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and the Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has revealed that the Akufo-Addo led government is committed to advancing the road networks in the Ashanti region as three interchanges will be commenced in the region beginning this year, Purefmonline.com reports.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Kumasi-based Angel FM with Kwame Tanko (KT) monitored by Purefmonline.com, the Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament disclosed that although five interchanges were proposed in the 2022 budget by the Finance Minister, the Government finds three to be of significant priority and will commit resources to it in the shortest possible time, failing to declare specific timelines.
He however noted that, out of the three, it is the Suame interchange that is considered to be of a topmost priority as it will be the second four-tier interchange seen in the country.
“Five interchanges have been announced to be constructed in Kumasi but it’s actually three that are of topmost priority. The three are Suame (roundabout), Santasi roundabout and Oforikrom around Anloga junction.
But the topmost of the topmost of these interchanges is that of the Suame (roundabout), it will be the first that will be commenced by the Akufo-Addo led Government beginning this year… That one I Know.”
“The Suame interchange will be a four-tier one, it will be the second one in the country. The other two interchanges will be two and three tiers.
Maybe the proposed Santasi roundabout interchange is likely to be a three-tier, but the most important one is that we are having the four-tier interchange at Suame roundabout. It is the busiest of the roundabouts in Kumasi given the arteries that feeds into it and I believe a four-tier road network will ease the traffic congestion significantly.
What is also worth mentioning is that asphalt overlay from Suame to Kronum will start next week. If done properly, when the interchange starts, we wouldn’t have to any other overlay again.”He told KT on Angel FM-Kumasi on Monday, March 14.
Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, in November last year disclosed that five interchanges will be constructed in the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area.
Delivering the 2022 budget in Parliament on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, he mentioned some of the areas where the interchanges will be built as Suame, Santasi and Airport Roundabout.
Mr. Ofori-Atta stated further that other road projects to be embarked on included the, “Kumasi South and Western Bypass, Kumasi Outer Ring Road, Mamfe-Koforidua Road, Oyibi-Dodowa-Somanya-Akuse Jn. Road, the Accra Outer Ring Road, Asutuare Junction-Volivo Bridge, Eastern Corridor Road (Gbintiri-Kulungugu), and the Sawla-Wa Road.
His announcement followed the construction of the Pokuase, Tamale, and Obetsebi Interchanges.
